What to Expect

Inpatient rehabilitation is a unique healthcare environment where patients receive comprehensive care that goes beyond traditional nursing services. Alongside regular medical and nursing care, patients follow a structured therapy schedule designed to support their recovery and help them achieve their rehabilitation goals. This integrated approach ensures that each patient receives both the medical attention they need and the therapeutic interventions crucial for restoring function and independence. In the following section, we’ll provide more details on what to expect during your stay in inpatient rehab.

Your Plan of Care

At Horizon Medical Center, an acute rehabilitation hospital, your recovery begins with the expertise of a dedicated team that includes doctors, nurses, therapists, psychologists, dietitians, case managers, and other clinical professionals. Shortly after admission, this team will conduct comprehensive evaluations to assess your unique needs. Based on these assessments, we’ll work together to set personalized goals and create an individualized plan of care tailored to your recovery. This plan ensures that every aspect of your treatment—whether physical, occupational, or speech therapy, medical care, or emotional support—works in harmony to help you achieve the best possible outcomes.

Your Schedule

From morning until evening, our patients are busy working toward their rehabilitation goals. You will participate in therapy, typically divided into morning and afternoon sessions. The skills and strategies you learn in therapy will be reinforced as you move through your day under the care of our nurses and additional team members.

Your Time with Therapy

During your inpatient rehabilitation, you’ll take part in a minimum of three hours of physical, occupational, and/or speech therapy each day, five days a week, with additional sessions on weekends if needed. Depending on your tolerance and ability to participate, you may receive up to 15 hours of therapy over seven days. Your therapy may include:

  • Physical Therapy (PT): To help you improve your mobility, strength, balance, and overall physical function.
  • Occupational Therapy (OT): To assist you in regaining the ability to perform daily tasks like dressing, eating, and bathing.
  • Speech Therapy (ST): To support you if you have difficulties with communication, swallowing, or cognitive issues.

This multi-disciplinary approach is focused on helping you achieve the best possible recovery.

Your Discharge

Your length of stay will depend on your medical needs, rehabilitation goals, and the progress you make. Recovery is a process, and each journey will look different. Most patients stay between 1-3 weeks, depending on their diagnosis, with the goal of providing intensive therapy and preparing them for a safe transition home or to a less intensive care setting. At Horizon Medical Center, your case manager, therapy, and medical team will collaborate with you and your family throughout your stay to ensure a smooth and timely discharge.
